Exclude worksheet

February 14, 2007
How do you exclude a worksheet? For example, we want to exclude microbiology worksheets.

Some people make a group worksheet just for the ol monitor. Another way is, at the top of the log the department is usually listed. If you click on the filters tab in options, you will see an option for departmental filters. If you enable this you can list there only those departments you want to see.

2 displays from one pc

Friday, March 16, 2007
Good afternoon Eric,

We have been duly impressed with your system and are considering purchasing the 2 license system. Is there any way we can place the 2 licenses on one computer and drive two different monitors. One would be for hematology and one for chemistry. We would like not having to run two computers simultaneously for this.

If you just wanted to send the same display to 2 different areas this is possible using a vga multiplexer and long vga cables. This is what we do in our lab we have one main display by the computer and about 5 other monitors in all the different areas. It was a cheap solution since the hospital had a computer ‘graveyard’ with an abundance of functional monitors.
However if you are thinking of running a hematology configuration and a chemistry configuration then this might present a problem as the 2 olmonitor programs running simultaneously on the same pc would probably crash quickly if it worked at all.
The program doesn’t need much pc power you could revive an old system for it if cost is the issue.
If space is the issue I recently went to some training at Abbott and their labs were running some incredibly small pc’s from dell, only a little bigger than a shoebox.

Background color

March 22, 2007
I am so excited! I got the OL Monitor Trial to work today after I downloaded the trial again today. Actually, it “saved the day” a couple of times on ER stats!!
Question: Is there a way to change the background color for a test that is over the turnaround time. Explanation: I left the general background blue with the font white. Then I had it set to turn the tests red when the TAT is exceeded. I find the red difficult to read with the blue background. Now, I have the general background set to white and the font black. I left the test red when the TAT is exceeded. I think this is better, but I was just wondering if there is a way to control the background for tests failing the TAT independently from the general background color.
Also, I showed the OL Monitor Trial to our Lab Manager. She is very excited also. Ideally, we would like to have the trial loaded onto three PC’s at the same time for a short period of time (a week would probably be long enough for us to be ready to make a purchase decision). Is this possible?
Thanks for your help. It is rare when we have a day that is as exciting as this one. I believe the OL Monitor would help to keep us “on our toes”.

That’s outstanding! As for the background for individual tat’s unfortunately Microsoft decided row-specific background colors were an unecessary feature when they designed the ‘listview’ control. I’m considering some third-party products that may provide this feature but at the current time you can only change the static background color, and color the text of tests for turn-around-times. You might find that there are a broader array of colors that are visible if you get creative with the main background color. One hospital the other day was using a light purple as the background with white letters. I find a dark army green background with a deep yellow relaxing. Red, orange, and yellow stand out well on these backgrounds much better than they do on white. After you settle on a color you may decide to change it up again if you ever decide to get a large lcd or plasma display. Changing the font size and style can also help visibility.
Anyway yes test away the trial lasts a month and may even let you go longer with a nuisance message up until almost 45 days.

please reestablish connection with host

Thursday, April 05, 2007
I have installed the Smarterm on my PC and downloaded the free trial, however when I click on the OL_Monitor Icon, it comes up but when it tries to refresh, I am coming up with a box that says Network Connection. After a few minutes I get another box that comes up and says Circuit disconnected, please reestablish connection with host. It sounds like it is having trouble connection to my main Misys box, is that correct?

Yes, make sure you have the right ip address for Misys entered in the box:

You can get to this box by clicking options-options, it’s under the Misc tab. It doesn’t have to be a numeric ip if you have a named address such as ‘sq1’ for the server you can type that here.

Use of OL Monitor with Reflections

Monday, March 26, 2007
Hello,
I was just wondering if the OLM can be used with WRQ Reflections terminal emulator?

Unfortunately it only works with Smarterm because it makes use of the BasicScript programming language built into Smarterm. But you can download an evaluation copy of Smarterm along with the trial of OlMonitor they’re both free to try. Here are some links for the eval of Smarterm:

or directly here:

Slow Running Macro

December 23, 2006
We are exploring your trial version of the OLMonitor. It has the potential to be extremely useful for us. We are encountering a problem where it takes the macro about ten minutes to run and bring up the overdue log. It does not seem to be a problem when the administrator is logged on to the program but when I log on it takes ten minutes. The administrator seemed to think it might be the smarterm and I contacted them about two weeks ago. They are still working to try to figure something out. Since we only have about two weeks of the trial left, I thought I would contact you to see if anyone else had encountered this type of problem.

The program uses the registry to store settings and send a few status messages. Sometimes Windows XP/2000 can be a little pesky about allowing reading/writing from the registry when the user does not have adminsitrative rights. This problem can be compounded if IT has implemented extra security policies. There are a few solutions: Fix windows: always logon as admin(obviously this might not be practical but it is the simplest), increase the user rights of the user in question. Or you can work around windows: save your options as ‘current user’ instead of ‘all users’. Windows usually does not mind if the current user modifies their own portion of the registry, it can get pesky when the current user starts trying to modify settings that affect all users. The drawback is that any setup or customization you do will be saved only for the current user and not all users of the pc. You can however export your settings from the option screen and import them again every time a new user wants to use the program. One thing to note about using the ‘current user’ option is that many times the windows network will save your settings on the server, and therefore if you were to logon to a different station as that user your settings would be accessible there. Finally the ultimate workaround to the windows registry problem is to not use the registry at all. This is an option which I have just added, to allow you to store your settings in an .ini file instead of the registry. The .ini file is stored in the program folder and thus any settings you save to the .ini file can be accessed by any user of that pc. To change the ‘current user’, ‘all users’, or ‘ini file’ option run the program and click options, you will find it under the ‘Misc’ tab of the options window. After clicking ok you should close and restart the program.
The ini option is the newest and there may be some minor issues with it’s implementation. However during my testing it functions with no problems so I encourage you to try it and see how it works for you.

Multiple TAT color codes

January 04, 2007
OK … I got OL_Monitor installed at one of our hospitals. I need to know IF the following can be done, and if YES … how to set it up:

The staff wants specific order codes: TROP, CKMB, HCG to turn YELLOW @ 30 Minutes; RED @ 45 Minutes
AND, they want ALL OTHER order codes to: turn YELLOW @ 20 Minutes; RED @ 30 Minutes

I had to test this but yes you can have the tests change color in the way that you described. The only thing is that you need to define the TAT’s IN A CERTAIN ORDER, for it to behave they way you want it to. What happens is that when a test matches a TAT, the program stops looking at the other TAT’s down the line, so you should have your most restrictive TAT’s defined first on down to the least restrictive. In your case you should define the 45-minute, trop-ckmb-hcg tat first, then the 30 minute, trop-ckmb-hcg second. THen define the 30 minute-all test tat, and finally the 20 minute-all test tat. Here are a few screenshots of how it should look:

First tat – 45 minutes individual tests:

2nd tat – 30 minutes individual tests:

3rd tat – 30 minutes all tests:

4th tat – 20 minutes all tests:

Hope this helps!

Early am hangs

Monday, January 22, 2007 A question for you….our OL Monitor seems to have problems every day at ~4am. I look at the Misys processes occurring at this time and I see the daily File System Cleanup occurs at 04:01 a.m. Although this does not take the Misys system down, it does slow it up somewhat. I’m wondering if this is triggering what our end users are reporting. Basically, they just re-start Ol Monitor and all is well.

Yes if the system slows down the Ol Monitor can get out of sync. The program waits a certain amount of time for Misys prompts and when they take too long it times out. The way the script is programmed it’s supposed to re-sync itself but for some reason it hangs up completely sometimes. In your case I guess it hangs every time. I will look to see if I can determine what step it is hanging up on and get back with you.
